Winter Solstice Ritual

Welcome Sweet Sister, into this Sacred Space

I invite you to gather together the things you need to create this ritual for Winter Solstice.

~ You will be using the element of fire to let go so gather what you need to make a fire.  This could be outside if you have a fire pit, or inside in a fireplace.  If you have neither, you can individually burn things in a small garden pot or fireproof container.
~ Find (at least 10 per person) dried and dead leaves.  If you live somewhere where winter feels only metaphorical (hello tropics!) try really paying attention to the environment around you.  there will be something shedding it’s leaves.
~ The elements of Earth, Air, Water and Fire (stone or crystal, feather, bowl of water, candle), which you can set up around your fire or burning container, or if you are using an indoor fireplace, you can make a circle in front.
~ Your journal and  pen.

Winter Solstice (also known as Yule) is the deepest part of winter.. It is the longest night and the shortest day of the year.  The earth is quiet and bare but her seeds are deep underground, in their magickal space waiting to grow.  The seed holds the potential!  This is the place where we experience the void, death, the energy of the Crone.  But it is also the re-birth and the return of the light, as once we move through the Solstice, the shift happens and the days start to lengthen and we begin our slow ascent to spring.

This ritual is about moving into that still place and letting go of everything that no longer serves you so that you can be re-birthed with the earth.

Light your ritual fire (or candle if you are using a container)

I light this fire in honour of the great mother and in honour of the crone, whose still, dark and quiet wisdom we connect with today at this Winter Solstice ritual. May we be safe, held and blessed in this sacred space.

When creating a simple ritual, I like to call my elements and directions simply.  By holding each of the elements (a candle, a bowl or water, a feather, a stone) I can bless myself with the energy of that element. Those words, the power, the magick words you utter are the ones you feel from holding and connecting with the elements. for this ritual I have assigned elements to directions based on where I live.  You can change them to fit in with your area.

Water, East, Maiden energy, new beginnings, flow, cleansing.
Fire, North, Mother energy, abundance, passion, transformation.
Air, West, Maga energy, harvest, breath, alchemy.
Earth, South, Crone energy, death, grounding, stillness.
Above, Below and Center.  I call you in.

And finally cast your circle saying three times

I cast this circle within and without, to hold the magick in, and keep the world out.

You have created your sacred space! Blessings on the magick you create here.
Spend some time in a quiet space contemplating and writing in your journal.  Here are the questions to consider.

What is happening for me that hasn’t been working?
What would I like my life to look like?
What do I need to let go of, in order to be re-born?

Make a list of all the things you want to let go of.  they may be a word or a paragraph! but list them all.  and do make sure that you keep this journal writing somewhere handy, as these questions can be reflected on at Imbolc.

Take your pile of leaves and if you can, write the things you want to let go of on them.  If that’s not possible, just imagine each word or phrase as you hold the leaf.

Consciously and one by one throw the leaves into the fire, or burn them in the container.
Speak what you are letting go of each time.

I am (your name) and I am letting go of……….

Watch the leaves burn and feel that Solstice fire burning away all that no longer serves you.
When you are done, feel that stillness, that void.  you have let it all go and are ready for rebirth.

I am (your name) and I shine new light on my life.

Take some deep breaths and give thanks for this time and space.

I give thanks for opportunity to release the old and birth the new.

Then give thanks and release the elements and directions

I give thanks and release the directions south, west, north, east, above, below and the centre.
I give thanks and release the elements of earth, air, fire and water.
I give great thanks and many blessings for this time and space to do magick and ritual for all my relations.

Finally you need to open your circle, and I love the traditional goddess closing

my circle is open but unbroken, may the peace of the goddess go forever in my heart.
blessed be.

Enjoy this space of the void! Allow your re-birth to be held as you would hold a new baby, close and gentle with lots of love.  You will receive a Ritual at Imbolc that will help you plant seeds and manifest your dreams. So enjoy this space in between! This is where the magick happens.

With love and deep gratitude for receiving my ritual
xx
